the changing workforce

Eastlake Work Group and Steelcase, global leaders in the office furniture industry, invited guests to eastlake work group’s head office in East Kilbride for a seminar to highlight the increasing challenge of a multi-generational workforce.
With four generations now working together Traditionalists (born before 1945), Boomers (1946-1964), Generation X (1965-1977) and Millenials (1978-1999) the clashing work styles and attitudes of young and old employees is one of the most significant and costly challenges facing employers.
Better health care tends to mean that older people are able to work beyond normal retirement age, whilst the youngest generation of workers, the Millenials, already make up 11% of European office workers, according to the Office of National Statistics.
Zoe Humphries, Steelcase’s senior workplace consultant, told guests at the seminar: “It is extremely important to understand the dynamics of your business and to create the most effective working environment for all your employees. The needs and work styles of people at either end of the age scale have never been greater, and this potentially brings conflict into the workplace.
“The old hierarchical office space designs and formal meeting spaces are far less important to Millenials who are not concerned about meeting rooms and big conference tables. Older workers, however, still require space and time for reflection and demand more choice and control in their working life.”
Julie Low, Major Accounts Director for Eastlake Commercial Interiors, said: “It is challenge for employers to create a workspace that will get the most out of their workforce.
“Many businesses are unaware of the benefits that carrying out an activity such as an office space audit can bring to their organisation. It allows you to identify the requirements of each of your staff members and respond to them, for example creating touchdown areas for those who are rarely in the office and who are stimulated by changes in their environment, or ensuring that there are enough workstations for those who prefer the stability that offers.
“By paying attention to the different needs of each member of your workforce, you can create an environment that encourages productivity and achievement - a must for any successful organisation.”
